China Medical Visa Guide (S1 / S2)

Overview

China issues two specific medical-purpose visas for international patients seeking treatment:

  • S2 Visa — Short-term medical visit (under 180 days). Most common for patients undergoing surgery, IVF cycles, or screening.
  • S1 Visa — Long-term medical stay (over 180 days). Used for extended treatment such as cancer chemo cycles or stem cell programs requiring multiple infusions.

Required Documents

  1. Hospital invitation letter — We provide this from your matched hospital with your name, treatment, and dates. Officially sealed.
  2. Medical records — Recent reports, scans, lab results in English (translation supported).
  3. Passport — At least 6 months validity, 2 blank pages.
  4. Passport photos — Recent, white background, embassy spec.
  5. Proof of funds — Bank statement or sponsorship letter.
  6. Travel itinerary — Round-trip flight reservation (not full ticket).
  7. Hotel reservation — Optional but helpful.
  8. Visa application form — COVA online form, completed.

Application Process

Submit the application package to your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate (or through CVASC visa center in some countries). Standard processing takes 4 working days; expedited service available for urgent cases (24–48 hours).

Visa-Free Transit Options

Some travelers can use China's 144-hour visa-free transit for short medical visits like screening or single consultations — but this is limited and not recommended for treatment.

Common Pitfalls

  • Submitting medical records in your native language without translation
  • Booking non-refundable flights before visa is approved
  • Hospital invitation letter from a non-accredited facility — embassies scrutinize this
  • Insufficient proof of return / onward travel

Visa Extension in China

If treatment extends, S1/S2 visas can be extended at the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) Exit-Entry Administration office. Apply at least 7 days before expiration. Extensions typically granted in 7 working days.
